RENTERS INSURANCE INVENTORY TEMPLATE

Download our free printable household inventory list from Alliance Insurance of the Rockies to simplify the renters insurance process.

Why You Need a Home Inventory

Creating a home inventory protects you from being underinsured and also makes it easier to file an insurance claim if anything happens to your home. Your home inventory allows you to calculate the value of all your possessions and choose the right renters insurance policy. Many people underestimate how much their belongings are actually worth until they take the time to do an inventory.

Home inventories also make it much easier for you to file a claim in case of an emergency. You’ll have a carefully documented list of damaged items and their value to submit to your insurance company. This can prevent delays with your insurance payout.

Home Inventory Options

Here at Alliance Insurance of the Rockies, we’re a bit old school, which is why we’ve created a printable home inventory worksheet. We prefer writing everything down by hand and storing the inventory in a secure location, like a safe deposit box or an online drive.

There are also many mobile app options available that can store your list and pictures of each item in the cloud. Here are a few of the best ones:

Regardless of what inventory method you choose, make sure to update it regularly and store it off-site, so that it’s not damaged or destroyed just when you need it most.

Home Inventory Categories

The two easiest ways to create a home inventory are room-by-room or by category. When you do a room-by-room record, you’ll start in a specific area of the house, like the kitchen, and write down everything you see. Don’t forget to record the contents of your kitchen cabinets! Our renters insurance inventory template, however, is organized by categories, including:

  • Major appliances
  • Electronic equipment
  • Furniture
  • Clothing

Our worksheet already includes many common household items, while leaving space for you to add additional items.

HOW TO CREATE A RENTERS INSURANCE HOME INVENTORY

The template we’ve created makes home inventory easier since it includes columns for important details like purchase price, purchase date, serial number, and brands. Here are a few other things to keep in mind as you work:

  1. Store sales receipts for major purchases with your inventory.
  2. Take pictures of each room in your home and capture important individual items, like jewelry.
  3. Update your inventory regularly; an incomplete inventory won’t help you in an emergency.
  4. Add up the total value of your personal property and make sure your insurance policy coverage matches that amount.

Get started now so you can update your personal property coverage and be protected from fires, floods, and other natural disasters.

Storing Your Home Inventory

If you choose an app or other online option for your home inventory, then you don’t have to worry about storage. Your home inventory list should be safely stored in the cloud. If you use our free printable worksheet, however, make sure to store it off-site or create a digital copy, so it is easily accessible when you need to file a claim.
